You could also try resetting their password by using the forgotten password link on the log in page of their e mail account. By using this link and answering the security questions correctly (questions such as home city and mother’s maiden name etc) you will be able to reset the password to one of your choice, thereby gaining access to the content of their account. 

The disadvantage with this approach however is that once you have reset the password the user will be aware that their account has been hacked and will promptly reset the password to secure the account again. This will prevent ongoing monitoring of the account and may also tip your spouse off about your suspicions. 

In this case it is much more advisable to use a program such as a keystroke logger to find out the users regular password and gain access to the account without raising suspicion. This also has the advantage of allowing you to monitor the contents of e mails sent and received even when hey are deleted from the account. 

It also allows you to find out if the user has set up any other e mail accounts for the purpose of communicating with another person without having to use their personal e mail account or if they are communicating via a third party website or chat forum. 

Keystroke loggers are simple pieces of software that can be installed on a computer without leaving any clues to their installation or presence and operate completely un-noticed in the background while recording every keystroke and mouse click. Many programs also have the capability of recording sound, video and screen shots at pre-programmed intervals. The program will only reveal itself when a code is typed into the RUN command on the start menu. Once your pre set password is entered you have access to the program and recorded evidence of all the computers activity which can prove definitively if your partner is cheating or not. 

If you do not have regular access to your partners computer, for example, if they are using a personal laptop, you can use one of the many programmes which can be installed remotely and set to e mail the results to you at regular intervals.
